Day 1 : Sight Seeing in Porto: First visit

For your first visit to Porto, you should discover the Old town (a Unesco world heritage site) and the river Douro, separating the city in two. Loiter in the market of Bolhao, then stroll along the road Santa Catarina, enjoying the shops along the way, you will reach the beautiful station of São Bento, magnificently lined with tiles.
Reach the historic district of Ribeira, walk down its alleyways, and climb up the tower dos Clérigos for a panoramic view of Porto. Visit the church São Francisco then have lunch on the quays of Ribeira at Filha da mãe preta or at Avo Maria.  By metro or on foot, take the Bridge Dom Luis I to join Vila Nova de Gaia, on the other bank of the Douro.
Next, enjoy the local specialty, Porto wine! There are numerous wineries and cellars to visit on the avenue Diogo Leite, which runs alongside the Douro. Calem is one of them. Then leave the banks of the river to visit the Couvent Nossa Senhora da Serra do Pilar. A cruise to discover the bridges of Porto will finish your day before dining at Matosinhos where there are plenty of fantastic fish restaurants to be found.

Day 2 : Culture, arts and Museums in Porto

Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the Palace of the purse with its Arab lounge with marvelous Moorish ornaments reminiscent of the palace of Alhambra in Grenada. Next visit the austere Sé, the cathedral of Porto.
To continue the discovery of religious baroque architecture of Porto, the church Santa Clara and the church do Carmo, richly decorated, are well worth a visit. You will then find yourself at the Museum Soares dos Reis, for a glimpse of Portuguese art of the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Try a barbeque at Assador tipico or at the trendy Clube da Gula. Enjoy the excellent Modern art museum, housing the collections of the Serralves Foundation. Next, take a walk along the avenida de Boavista that will bring you to the ocean. You can also take the avenue Marechal Gomes da Costa to the peaceful district Foz do Douro.

Day 3 : Excursions to Minho

Beautifully green, the region of Minho is nicknamed the « garden of Portugal ». The varieties of vinho verde there benefit from the ideal climate for their development. Reaching Braga you will enjoy a young and dynamic town, where religion continues to play a predominant role. The churches are plentiful, do not hesitate to enter at random during whilst exploring the village. You may also have spare time to see a folk dance performances.
Head towards the west where the artisan town of Barcelos presents an authentic market every Thursday. Finally reach Viana do Castelo on the coast. Try the seafood specialties at the Taberna do Valentim or at the excellent Casa d’Armas. Enjoy this fishing port with its magnificent mansions then stroll through the alleyways on the Praça da Republica. Venture 15 kilometres to the north of Viana do Castelo to find the most beautiful beaches, ideal to relax at the end of the day.

Day 4 : Excursions to Guimaraes

Guimaraes played a big role in the history of Portugal, to have witnessed the birth of Alphonse Henriques, the first king of the country. The medieval market town, a Unesco world heritage site, features paved squares,numerous alleways to get lost in and the palace of the Dukes of Bragance. Next visit the Vila Real, that will serve as your base to find the Manor de Mateus, then continue your exploration towards the Natural park of Alvão. Taste the specialties of the mountain region at Museo dos Presuntos or at Espadeiro.

Day 5 : When it gets too hot..

When it is really hot in Porto, take the road to its beaches, accessible from downtown. The bus 500 leaving from the Praça de Ribeira will lead you to the coast and you'll be spoiled for choice; they all have their charm.
